In the seven years since ADT's Artistic Director Garry Stewart premiered his celebrated deconstruction of Swan Lake - Birdbrain - he has become one of Australia's most highly regarded contemporary choreographers.

For the 2008 Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts Garry presents G, a non-linear re-composition of Giselle.

Dislocating and transcending Giselle's romantic narrative, G converts the dancers from characters into visceral explorations of hysteria, sex, death, loss and metamorphosis.
Sex, death, hysteria and jealousy are providing Australian Dance Theatre's Artistic Director Garry Stewart and his dancers with plenty of ingenious material on the eve of the world premiere of ADT's new work, G

G is Garry Stewart's re-envisioning of the ballet Giselle.

"It's fascinating reworking a classical iconic ballet. As a director I draw together threads that show the universality of the narrative and how the themes might embody a relevance to our current conditions. Simultaneously I am portraying the distinctions and differences between contemporary values and mores and that of a previous era. Giselle is referred to as the Hamlet of the classical ballet canon so certainly it is very rich territory encompassing sex, death, hysteria, gender, class and the supernatural. Like Swan Lake it is at the pinnacle of the art form and has been integral in forming the conventions that constitute the bedrock of classical ballet tradition. As such, there is much to uncover and G is the richer for it," said Garry.

G fully showcases Garry Stewart's trademark full tilt athletic choreography and its rapid-fire physical prowess.

Larissa McGowan, an award-winning dancer who has been working with Garry at ADT during the past eight years, has taken on the role of assistant choreographer for G.

"This is an incredible opportunity for me," said Larissa. "As a dancer and a young choreographer I've been privileged to participate in the creation of all of Garry's works for ADT over the past 8 years. The extremely diverse physicality of G draws on many different movement forms including gymnastics, ballet, breakdance, even Butoh! It's a totally thrilling movement palette that's riveting to watch and equally as exhilarating to dance."

Under the artistic direction of Garry Stewart since 1999, ADT has embarked on a remarkably successful artistic trajectory that has distinguished it as daring, exciting and at the forefront of the art form. As a result, ADT enjoys an enviable national and international reputation and is currently regarded as one of the world's best contemporary dance companies.

G has been co-commissioned by The Joyce Theater's Stephen and Cathy Weinroth Fund for New Work (New York), Southbank Centre (London) and Merrigong Theatre Co. at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (Wollongong).
