GYPSY BALLADS.

Karin Schaupp and the Adelaide Chamber Singers
with Special Guest Oscar Guzmán

Internationally renowned Australian guitarist, Karin Schaupp, will be joined by Adelaide Chamber Singers (ACS) and special guest Oscar Guzmán for a concert program of drama, passion and hope.

Schaupp and ACS will present the South Australian premiere of The Butterfly and the Phoenix, inspired by the Victorian bushfires of 2009. This work, which celebrates the strength of the human spirit, was written for Schaupp by Melbourne composer Mary Doumany. It employs Schaupp as both guitarist and narrator, the voice of the poet; underpinned by a wordless choir, the voice of the spirit.

Schaupp and ACS will also perform the Spanish masterpiece Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads) by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, based on powerful and emotional texts by Garcia Llorca. Imbued with rich Spanish gypsy harmonies and colour, the guitar part is interwoven with a dramatic choir part and languid vocal solos.

To deepen the Spanish flavour of the concert, Schaupp will be joined in duo by flamenco sensation and esteemed AIGF international guest, Oscar Guzmán.

Guzmán and Schaupp have been good friends for many years, but this year's Adelaide International Guitar Festival is the first time they will join forces on stage.

Prepare to be moved by the "poetic intensity" of Schaupp's virtuosic performance, the flamenco fire of Guzmán, and the ethereal voices of ACS.

(Karin Schaupp) "...This was not merely magnificent playing it was miraculous..."
The Mercury (Australia)

"The guitar of Oscar Guzmán captivated the audience of Prague"
Gema Cubo ? Radio Praha ? Prague, Czech Republic.

"rare are there singers who can move so smoothly between solo and chorus roles."
