CLIFF & THE SHADOWS - TOGETHER AGAIN.
50th Anniversary Tribute
The music of a legend performed by an Aussie legend.
Over many decades there have been few bigger or more consistent in the world of pop music than Cliff Richard. The only artist to have No1 hits in five consecutive decades and over 120 chart entries in the UK including 14 chart toppers. A record topped only by the Beatles. So when it came to finding someone to mark this musical milestone in this country one performer stood out.
Marty Rhone has been described by Bert Newton as 'one of this country's best performers - ever' and Bert's been around long enough to make such comparisons.
Former Australian fast bowler and now entertainment agent Len Pascoe recently commented after seeing Rhone perform - 'Watching Marty Rhone perform is like watching Bradman go out to bat again' - such is his admiration for the Australian entertainer.
Marty Rhone has become a legend of the Australian music scene through his ability to sustain a stellar career over five decades that has included No1 hit records, television series, successful stage shows here and abroad. He has worked alongside some of the biggest names in show business, including his first gig at 17 as a support act for the Rolling Stones, and his record breaking stint alongside Hollywood superstar Yul Brynner in the London Palladium production of the King & I.
Rhone has not undertaken an Australian tour for nearly two decades; and only twice since his 70's mega-hits 'Denim and Lace' and 'A Mean Pair of Jeans' but he has been far from idle. Much of his work since has been overseas in the UK, Asia and the US including the only appearance by an Australian solo artist at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
Music fans have long remarked about the physical similarities and synergies between Cliff Richard and Marty Rhone. Both are Eurasian and born in Asia. Both have had successful singing and acting careers. Both have worked with John Farrar of Grease fame and both have had songs written for them by ex pat Australian Terry Britten.
Rhone is joined on stage in this 2-hour-long music fest by guitarist Tom Ferris who recreates the unmistakable guitar sound of the Shadows, the world's most successful instrumental band ever and Cliff's original backing group. They perform all the great songs like Young Ones, Livin' Doll, Summer Holiday, Do You Wanna Dance, Congratulations, Apache, Wonderful Land, to the later mega hits such as Devil Woman, Wired for Sound, We Don't Talk Anymore, The Only Way Out, Dreamin', Hank B Marvin's Sasha and many more.
It all started 50 years ago, back in 1958, with the hit 'Move It' and the celebration is set to continue thanks to our own Marty Rhone.
